Maiden Voyage

Magellan's ship Victoria

On August 10, 1519—a short 490 years ago to the day—Ferdinand Magellan set sail on an expedition to find a path for Spanish ships to navigate to the Spice Islands. Little did he know that voyage would make him the first to circumnavigate the globe. He left port not knowing what he would find along the way, what obstacles lay out before him, let alone if he would make it back alive (he didn’t).

Just one year ago, my own journey began. I was a casualty of Wall Street, out of work like thousands of others, and left to chart a new course for myself. I felt a bit like my pal Ferdinand as I began my own expedition into the unknown. After plenty of soul-searching and gut-wrenching personal inventory, I finally found myself exhilarated once again at the thought of starting a new American brewery, and now I’ll be blogging to tell the tale about it.

Sure, there are over 1400 breweries in the country, do we really need another? Maybe not, but it’s something I’m passionate about, committed to, and let’s face it…there are worse places to do R&D than the local watering hole! It is certainly a competitive industry, but I think I’ve got a solid idea and can build the team to execute. For the better part of the last year, I’ve been traveling around the country, talking to some of the most knowledgeable people in the industry and researching how to do this right–the first time. And yes, I’ve been drinkin’ a ton of beer! Clearly this is not a simple endeavor, and I look forward to sharing my progress, and just as likely, my setbacks, as the journey progresses.

Along the way, I promise to share some of the things I’m passionate about. And as long as we’re in this thing together, I want to know more about you, too.  So here’s a partial list from me to get the dialogue started:

Art–in all media

Absurdist humor

The modern day Shakespeare

Entrepreneurship

Lying, er, marketing

Addiction

Doing our part

Undying devotion and Eternal heartache

Thinking small

Going big

True inspiration

The only band that mattered

The only band that matters

The only other acceptable answer

Their collaboration

The heir apparent

The soundtrack to drinking

Oh, I almost forgot…

From Abbey to Wit, Asheville to Zagreb and Abita to Zywiec, I’ll be sharing my thoughts on what I’m drinking, and am certainly interested to hear what you’re drinking, what you like/dislike, what you would like to see more of, less of, and not at all. With that, I think it’s time we pony up to the bar and wet our whistles. What’ll ya have? I got this round…
